Water tightness EN 1027 & EN 12208 & EN 14351-1

Doors subject to bad weather may be certified by European standards (EN 1027 and EN 12208).

This performance feature guarantees the water tightness of external doors. To do this, the doors will be subjected to driving rain combined with increasing pressure to simulate very heavy downpours.

This performance feature is often associated with air tightness and wind resistance. Indeed, these are commonly known collectively as AWW performance features (air-water-wind).

European standards EN 1027 and EN 12208

Tests carried out on single and double doors at the NB (Notified Body laboratory), in accordance with current European standards:

EN 1027: Windows and doors – Water tightness – Test method
EN 12208: Windows and doors – Water tightness – Classification
The standards provide for different classes using two spraying methods, A or B, class A being the most restrictive and the most common (A = incline of 24° / B = incline of 84°).

EN 12208 | Windows and Doors Water Impermeability and Classification

The “EN 12208” standard, titled “Windows and Doors – Water Impermeability and Classification,” defines the classification of test results for fully assembled windows and doors after testing for water impermeability. This standard categorizes the test results based on exposure categories related to test pressure levels for air permeability, watertightness, and wind resistance. It provides a framework for assessing the performance of windows and doors in terms of their ability to resist water penetration under specified test conditions. The standard is essential for ensuring the quality and durability of windows and doors in terms of their resistance to water ingress, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity and performance of building envelopes.

The key points about the scope of EN 12208 are:

1.It applies to fully assembled window and door sets from any material, not just individual components.

2.The test method takes into account conditions when the window or door is installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications and relevant European Standards and codes of practice.

3.The standard does not apply to the joints between the window or door frame and the building construction.

4.Watertightness is defined as the ability of the closed and fixed test specimen to resist water penetration up to a specified maximum test pressure (Pmax) under test conditions.

5. Water penetration refers to the continuous or repeated wetting of the inside surfaceof the test specimen or parts not designed to get wet, as water flows back to the outer surface.

6. The waterproof limit determines the maximum test pressure Pmaxat which the test specimen remains watertight under test conditions for the specified time.

EN 12208 establishes a classification system for assessing the watertightness performance of fully assembled windows and doors based on standardized testing procedures, taking into account real-world installation conditions.
